I am fortunate to be able to travel to New Zealand every two years to attend the CollaboratioNZ. There are numerous eucalyptus trees (all non-native) growing in New Zealand so I always take a suitcase full of silk scarves and silk yardage along so that I can spend my day's dyeing. The particular eucalyptus leaves used in this scarf are very rare because, being at the top of the tree, they are normally not accessible. While driving about collecting eucalyptus leaves for the dye pot, my friend I were extremely lucky to happen upon a large eucalyptus tree that was either being severely pruned, or being removed permanently from a yard. We were so excited! Christmas had arrived early. We filled the back of her station waggon with as many branches of this tree as was possible. It was the first time we'd ever been able to access fresh, mature eucalyptus leaves that are generally located 20-50' off the ground. If only we could have taken all the leaves from that tree. Regretably, the city workers were loading the branches and leaves into the disposal truck as we were loading the station waggon. We were very lucky to have happened upon the sceen when we did. If we'd arrived half an hour later, there wouldn't have been any leaves left.
